Casein enzymic hydrolysate and peptic digest of animal tissue provide nitrogenous compounds. Dextrose provides an energy source. Chloramphenicol inhibits a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria which makes the medium selective for fungi  The low pH favours fungal growth and inhibits contaminating bacteria from clinical specimens (4).

MOS - THE EXCELLENT TOXIN BINDER
MOS is an excellent binde, it can effectively bind and absorb various pathogenic bacteria and reduce their infections that is due to the activity of binding to mannose which reduces the risk of pathogen colonization in the intestinal tract. All the major mycotoxins found in the feed can be perfectly bound by mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) and have the ability to effectively flush them out of the gut. Mos helps in adsorption of mycotoxins over a pH range that brackets the G.I. tract of most animals. The combination has a very strong adsorbing capacity for aflatoxins, zearalenone, fumonisin etc.

Brain Heart Infusion Medium is useful for cultivating a wide variety of microorganisms since it is a highly nutritive medium. It is also used to prepare the inocula for antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Brain Heart Infusion Broth is a modification of the original formulation of Rosenow, where he added pieces of brain tissues to dextrose broth. Brain Heart Infusion Broth is also the preferred medium for anaerobic bacteria, yeasts and moulds. This medium is nutritious and well buffered to support the growth of wide variety of organisms. With the addition of 10% defibrinated sheep blood, it is useful for isolation and cultivation of Histoplasma capsulatum and other fungi. For selective isolation of fungi, addition of gentamicin and/ or chloramphenicol is recommended. Proteose peptone and infusions (calf brain and beef heart) serve as sources of carbon, nitrogen, essential growth factors, amino acids and vitamins. Dextrose serves as a source of energy. Disodium phosphate helps in maintaining the buffering action of the medium whereas sodium chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium of the medium.

The Fluid Thioglycollate Medium formulation was first described in 1940 by Brewer.⁽¹⁾ This medium demonstrated that combining a small amount of agar and a reducing substance initiated the growth of anaerobic bacteria. The Fluid Thioglycollate formulation is the standard medium recommended by the Food and Drug Administration, National Institute of Health, the National Formulary, and the U.S. Pharmacopeia for sterility testing of clear fluid biologics and other sterile products.^(2,4,5)

The addition of a small amount of agar in the media aids in the initiation and growth of small inocula and anaerobes by impeding the diffusion of oxygen into the medium. It also retards the dispersion of CO₂ and the reducing substance from the microenvironment surrounding the inoculum. Sodium thioglycollate is a reducing agent which maintains a low oxygen tension by removing molecular oxygen from the environment. Peroxides, which may be lethal to many anaerobic organisms, are not formed under this condition. Cystine and casein supply carbon and nitrogenous compounds, dextrose is added as another energy source, and sodium chloride maintains osmotic equilibrium.

Rappaport Vassiliadis soya peptone broth (RVS broth) is used as an enrichment growth medium for the isolation of Salmonella species.^[1] It is not recommended for the enrichment of Salmonella Typhi, which is inhibited in RVS broth.^[2] It is an alternative to selenite broth. It is not associated with potential teratogenicity problems seen with the use of selenite broth. It enriches salmonellae because they are better able to survive the high osmotic pressure in the medium and because they can multiply at relatively lower pH and higher temperatures compared with other gut bacteria. RVS broth has a pH around 5.2.
